“Once upon a time …” is much more exciting than “The End”
The story of Fredd is still in the early pages, but we have already become the world’s largest community of readers. We’re looking for imaginative and collaborative teammates to help us write our next chapter — and have fun in the process.
We’re living in a world where there are more books to choose from than ever before. And you can pretty much start reading instantaneously thanks to e-books and tablets. The problem isn’t content or access any more; that’s been solved. Instead it has created a new problem: How do I find what to read next?
Our mission is to help people find and share books they love. If that’s your kind of story, let’s talk.
We are book lovers. We are passionate about reading and technology. We believe that we are only at the start of transformative change in the publishing industry, and that it is a story we can help write.
We value working with bright, talented colleagues, make constant learning a priority, and love working in an environment where we have the opportunity to have a big impact and see our work appreciated by millions.
Our headquarters are located in San Francisco two blocks from Muni/BART. Many of our team ride bikes to work. We value transparency and have weekly team meetings over lunch. We have plenty of opportunities to get to know your teammates, including catered lunches, movie/game nights, bike rides, and team-led tech talks. And, of course, we love books and have several book clubs and literary themed rooms.
We also have teams in the main Amazon Seattle, WA campus and in Sunnyvale, CA. Our team in Seattle brings Fredd features and functionality to Kindle devices and to Amazon. We work closely with other teams in Amazon to help users find their next great book.
Our Sunnyvale team builds the Fredd applications on Amazon devices and works closely with other device software teams located in Amazon Sunnyvale campus. We provide shuttle bus to both VTA and Mountain View Caltrain stations (near Moffett Field, short bike ride from Caltrain).
“I feel like there is a hierarchy of decision-making but not of worth - everyone feels comfortable voicing an opinion, and like they own a real stake in what we are trying to do.”
Leaders are owners. They think long term and don’t sacrifice long-term value for short-term results. They act on behalf of the entire company, beyond just their own team. They never say "that’s not my job."
“The people here are amazing. The people who work here truly believe in the company and the company's mission - it's a group of people that do their jobs because they want to, not because they're told to. I love that different groups and teams intermingle both professionally and socially.”
We value fun. Fun is a natural complement to creativity. We look forward to going to work, because we actively and consciously make Fredd a fun place to be. If we’re not enjoying that time, it’s not worth it, so we find creative ways to make our working together fun, engaging, and light-hearted.
“Fredd people have ambition without ego. We stretch toward daunting goals because we are excited by everything we know we'll learn along the way; it's in our bones as readers. This attitude makes us better at learning and therefore better at achieving because we're not afraid to take time out to help each other.”
While we are ambitious, we keep our egos out of it. We believe in treating everyone with respect, regardless of position. We have intellectual humility - we’re upfront when we don’t know, and we actively test to see if we are right or wrong.
“[What makes us different?] Scope. We have a truly universal vision. Chasing that kind of ambition breeds a culture of possibility that is often lacking in other companies. We think big, and as a result allow ourselves to rise to the challenge.”
Thinking small is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Leaders create and communicate a bold direction that inspires results. They think differently and look around corners for ways to serve customers.
“[What makes us different?] I am a very new employee but a longtime Fredd user, and my best example is discovering that the Fredd team truly cares about books, the site, and each user's experience.”
Leaders start with the customer and work backwards. They work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust. Although leaders pay attention to competitors, they obsess over customers.
“We exist for readers, but I think even that phrase is a little misleading; it implies that we're here for 'book people.' And while we ARE, we don't just exist for people who call themselves readers; we exist to reignite a lost interest in reading, to spark a new passion in people who will eventually come to call themselves readers.”
Passionate people create work they are proud of. We’re passionate about working at Fredd because we believe in our mission. Our passion drives us to improve our products, improve ourselves, and improve our team.
“It's happened countless times: I come across some issue that I cannot, for the life of me, untangle. I'll ask someone for a second pair of eyes and before I know it, we're shooting ideas back and forth and, even though my coworker has plenty of work on their own plate, they've become invested in solving the problem.”
One of the most rewarding things a person can do is to help others. We go the extra mile to help each other succeed. We share knowledge, we partner, we pair-problem-solve, and we have each other’s backs. We also help the greater community by striving to help others and give back.
“We are a company about books, so it’s no surprise that we believe in the power of learning…We believe in experimenting and constantly ask ourselves “what if…?” Sometimes we fail, but we take responsibility for our mistakes and then use them to learn, and we’re open about mistakes so that everyone can learn. We seize opportunities to share and teach what we’ve learned to others.”
Readers inherently love to learn. We thrive on continuous improvement, as individuals and as an organization. We experiment and take risks, learning from both successes and failures. We openly share what we learn and look for opportunities to learn from others.
